As we approach National Puppy Day next week – March 23rd to be exact, it’s the perfect time to explore the unique characteristics of puppies and the special care they require during their crucial developmental stages. Having worked as a vet tech and having had children of my own, I am dedicated to ensuring dog parents know how to make the most out of the exhausting yet critical puppy periods. So, here are the top 5 differences between puppies and adult dogs.
1. Energy
Puppies are bundles of boundless energy, often seeming tireless compared to their adult counterparts. Adult dogs enjoy downtime and naps, while puppies are more on the go, exploring and playing, only to poop out every so often and regain their energy with a nap.
Due to their high energy, puppies benefit from frequent, short play sessions and exercise appropriate for their age to prevent naughty behaviors, boredom, and support healthy mental, physical, and emotional development.
2. Nutrition
A puppy’s diet supports their rapid growth and development. Puppies usually require food higher in calories, protein, and essential nutrients compared to adult dogs. Puppies need multiple small meals throughout the day, gradually transitioning to an adult feeding schedule as they mature. It’s important to consult with a veterinarian to ensure your puppy receives the right nutrition for their breed and size.
3. Training and Socialization
The early months of a puppy’s life are critical for training and socialization. Unlike adult dogs who may already have established behaviors, sensitivities, fears, etc., puppies are blank slates. They are eager to learn and excited about new experiences. Introducing them to various people, animals, sounds, and environments during their socialization period (typically between 3-16 weeks) is crucial for developing well-adjusted adult dogs.
4. Sleep
While adult dogs have more stable sleep patterns and often adjust to their owner’s schedule, puppies require significantly more sleep – up to 18-20 hours a day. This sleep is crucial for their growth and development. Providing a quiet, comfortable space for undisturbed rest is essential. While potty training, using a crate as a sleep spot encourages puppies to hold their bladder. As they gain more bladder control, you can add cozy bedding in the crate and have them enjoy their safe space even with the door open.
5. Physical Development
Puppies undergo rapid physical changes in their first year or two – depending on the breed and size – including teething, growth spurts, and developing motor skills. Adult dogs, having completed their physical development, maintain a more stable physique. Puppies need special consideration during these stages, including appropriate chew toys for teething and careful monitoring of exercise to protect developing joints.
Special Care for Puppies
It’s exciting to bring a new puppy home but they come with a few extra considerations than an adult dog might. Here, are some important care considerations for puppies that you should prioritize as your puppy grows:
- Regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations during the first year
-
Gentle, positive reinforcement training to establish good behaviors
-
Puppy-proofing your home to prevent accidents, ingestion of harmful objects, and damage; offering safe playthings instead
-
Gradual introduction to grooming routines to helps puppies become comfortable with handling and water (depending on the breed)
-
Monitoring and adjusting food intake to prevent under or over-feeding
- Monitoring amount of exercise that are allowed per stage of development – running with your dog, for example, isn’t advised until they reach adulthood (in most cases)
