Take a Walk in the Park at St. Louis’ Members-Only Dog Parks

St. Louis' Members-Only Dog Parks

Yesterday was Take a Walk in the Park Day – celebrated annually on March 30th. When people hear the words “park” in terms of dogs, they often think of “dog parks.” As a former vet tech and avid pet advocate, I tend to cringe at the thought of dog parks, but I recognize that many dog parents want to offer their dogs the dog park experience. Today, in honor of Take a Walk in the Park Day, and in an effort to bring you real, sustainable solutions to your most pressing pet parenting problems, I’m highlighting St. Louis’ Members-Only Dog Parks as a viable option for dog park fans. Because they have a membership model, these dog parks have some more control over who enters their park, which is a very good thing!

The idea behind membership-based dog parks is to provide safe, clean, and engaging environments for dogs to play and socialize. These parks offer unique features and benefits, making them a great option for pet owners seeking a secure space for their 4-legged kids. Because they require registration and usually ask important questions about health status and bite history, these dog parks add a layer of safety and security that I can get behind.

Southwest City Dog Park at Willmore Park

Located in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood, Southwest City Dog Park (SWCDP) is one of the city’s largest and oldest membership-based dog parks. Spanning 1.1 acres, the park offers two play areas—the main area for active dogs and the alternate area with its own entrance for smaller, older, or shy pups. In addition to off-leash fun, SWCDP features agility equipment, dog pools during summer months, and winter shelters with straw climbing mazes.

Southampton Neighborhood Association members enjoy a discounted rate of $55 per year. Because dog parks can be ideal areas to transmit communicable diseases, proof of current rabies and bordetella vaccinations is required for membership. While the park is currently being maintained and may be closed until June, they are accepting new member registrations.

Tails and Trails Dog Park at Queeny Park

Tails and Trails Dog Park is a sprawling 5-acre facility located in Queeny Park on Mason Road. This park features separate areas for large and small dogs, walking trails, agility equipment, water stations, and biodegradable waste disposal stations. It’s an ideal spot for dogs to run freely while enjoying enrichment activities.

Membership costs $75 annually, with additional fees of $25 per dog for families with more than one pet. Day passes are also available for $6, making it accessible to occasional visitors. Membership requires proof of vaccinations and spay/neuter documentation. Even the day pass holders have to fill out the application and provide proof of vaccinations, which, to me, makes perfect sense. Visit their FAQs here.

Situated in downtown St. Louis at Lucas Garden Park, Lucas Dog Park offers a fenced-in area specifically for off-leash play. The park includes toys like balls and frisbees, water bowls, kiddie pools, and free poop bags to maintain cleanliness. It’s a smaller park but highly regarded for its community atmosphere.

Annual membership costs $75 per dog and requires proof of vaccinations. While there are no day passes available, the park’s strict membership policy ensures a safe environment for all dogs.

I like the idea that Lucas Dog Park hosts a dog park clean-up every 2nd Friday of the month, from March to October. Held from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, this event keeps the park clean and ensures that its members are active in caring for their resources. It also seems like a great way to build community and connect members.

To be accepted to and make the most of these parks:

  • Ensure your dog is up-to-date on the required vaccinations
  • Be honest when completing all registration forms
  • Familiarize yourself with and follow park rules
  • Socialize your pet outside of the park environment to prepare them for group play
  • Make sure your pet is on a heartworm, flea, and tick preventative when visiting
  • Bring essentials like water bowls or toys
  • Avoid distractions while at the park so you can be a good neighbor and member
