As a parent to four children and many cats, I have learned much about behavior over the last 28+ years. I have also helped teach our management team, dog walkers, and pet sitters about positive reinforcement, patience, and guidance in pet care. Today, I have an exciting announcement for you that was inspired by my passion for education and understanding of the importance of dog training. Read on to learn more!
The Story of Buddy and Louie
About 15 years ago, two littermates named Buddy and Louie joined the 4LK family as clients. These two joyful, three-year-old golden retrievers were as sweet as can be. But, they, unfortunately, missed out on the essential early training. Training in the early months of life lays the foundation for a harmonious home and a strong human-dog relationship. Yet, every time they were let out of their kennels, Buddy and Louie would bounce all over their humans. The resulting chaos would send the pups straight back to their kennels, and everyone would feel frustrated.
Life soon brought a new chapter: the boys’ dad met a lovely woman with children and a spirited wheaten terrier who made it her mission to pick on shy, gentle Louie. When their blended family moved to Town & Country, they were faced with a tricky rule—their new subdivision allowed only one dog. That’s how Louie came to stay with me…and he never left!
The Importance of Dog Training
My family and I had spent 25 years offering private boarding in our home, yet we never had our own dog. Instead we were used to “borrowing” the companionship of our clients’ pups and giving them back when their families returned.
Nevertheless, Louis quickly became a cherished part of the family, but there was work to be done. We immediately started teaching him to build confidence and exhibit good behavior. Louis became a more contented dog, one that was also easier to live with. This experience reinforced the importance of dog training and how beneficial expert guidance is for both dogs and their people.
Announcing 4LK Training
We’ve referred clients to St. Louis area dog trainers for years. But, I always dreamed of bringing that expertise in-house. I envisions hiring someone who truly shares our philosophy and passion for positive reinforcement and adding dog training as one of our core services.
In January 2024, I decided it was time to make this dream a reality. That month, I enrolled one of our amazing team members—already a valued part of our crew for two years and with over four years’ experience with groups of dogs—into an intensive, year-long dog training certification program. And, today, I’m thrilled to announce 4LK Training —personalized, at-home training designed to help you and your dog thrive together, right where most challenges start: at home.
