On the 4th of July, St. Louis and its surrounding areas host some of the Midwest’s most spectacular Independence Day celebrations, drawing families and friends to parks, riverfronts, and city centers. However, while these displays light up the sky for us, they can be a source of anxiety and danger for our pets. Here’s how to enjoy the best fireworks in St. Louis this year while keeping your furry companions safe and comfortable.
Professional Displays vs. DIY Fireworks
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a professional display, of which many are planned in and around St. Louis. If you prefer to stay home and shoot fireworks, keep the following ordinances in mind:
- In St. Louis City, it is illegal to sell, buy, or use fireworks. Violations can result in fines between $100-$500 and/or jail time of 5-90 days, with increased penalties for repeat offenses within a year
- In St. Louis County, it is illegal to sell, buy, or use fireworks unless you have a permit. To obtain a permit, an application must be submitted at least 10 days before the fireworks display and approved by the relevant fire protection district. Violations can result in fines ranging from $50 to $1,000 and/or up to 90 days in jail.
- In St. Charles County, the use of fireworks is permitted between July 2nd and July 5th, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM in unincorporated areas. However, St. Peters prohibits fireworks entirely, while other municipalities like St. Charles, O’Fallon, Wentzville, and Lake St. Louis have specific timeframes for their use. It is important to check with your specific municipality for their fireworks regulations

Why Fireworks & Pets Don’t Mix
Fireworks are loud, unpredictable, and often accompanied by bright flashes, all of which can trigger fear and anxiety in animals. The sudden noises may cause cats, dogs, and other pets to hide, shake, vocalize, or even attempt to escape. Some animals may experience stress for hours, even after the noise ends.
How to Keep Pets Safe During Fireworks
To ensure your pets stay safe and calm during the festivities, consider these important steps:
Bring Pets Indoors
Don’t bring pets to fireworks displays. The noise and crowds can be overwhelming and dangerous. At home, keep all windows and doors securely closed, and use blackout curtains to minimize flashes.
Create a Safe Space for Your Pet(s)
Set up a quiet, comfortable area away from windows for your pet to relax in. Cozy rooms, walk-in closets, bathrooms, or basements work well. When prepping, outfit the room with your pet’s bed, toys, and familiar items. Playing soft music or white noise can help mask the sound of fireworks.
Comfort & Reassure Your Pet
When possible, stay home with your pet. If your pet seeks comfort, provide gentle cuddles or soothing words. Remain calm so your pet feeds of your relaxed energy.
Pressure wraps or vests (like ThunderShirts) can also help some pets feel more secure.
Use Distraction
Offer high-value treats, puzzle toys, or frozen Kong-style toys to keep your pet engaged and distracted from the noise. Kongs filled with canned cheese and kibble, Greek yogurt and blueberries, and peanut butter and bananas are a very special treat for a very scary night!
Prevent Injuries & Escapes
Avoid walking your dog or letting your cat out during peak fireworks, usually all weekend between 4 to 11 PM. When walking, use a secure harness and leash to keep your startled pet from running off. Ensure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are up to date in case they bolt out of fear.
If crating, make sure you check on your pet often. Dogs that are crated while panicked can hurt themselves by trying to escape a locked crate. Ideally, keep the crate door open so they can come and go as they please.
Consult Your Veterinarian
If your pet has severe anxiety, talk to your vet about possible medications or desensitization training. Many medications start working immediately, making them a great short-term solution. Desensitization can take months, so it’s too late for this Independence Day, but can be done in time for New Year’s Eve.
Shop Locally
If it’s too late for veterinary intervention, consider stocking up on CBD or calming treats at a local St. Louis pet supply store like Pet Supplies Plus, Four Muddy Paws, and Lola & Penelope’s.
Avoid Outdoor Hazards
After fireworks, check your yard for debris before letting pets outside. Keep them away from barbecue grills, sparklers, and any leftover food scraps that may be toxic. When walking, keep an eye out for fireworks debris to prevent ingestion, choking, blockage, etc.
