St. Louis storms can come on fast and loud, making even the bravest pets anxious and unsettled. As St. Louis pet parents, we know how quickly thunder, wind, and flashes of lightning can turn a relaxing evening into a stressful ordeal for our four-legged kids. Whether your pets tend to hide, pace, or bark their way through bad weather, a little preparation and the right calming tools and techniques can make a world of difference. Here are my top 5 ways to support your pet during storms in St. Louis. Check out last week’s blog to access our “go bag” checklist so you have all you need on hand in case, heaven forbid, a storm requires you to get out of dodge!
Top 5 Ways to Support Your Pet During Storms in St. Louis
Here are my top 5 tips to keep your 4-legged kids safe and calm during weather events:
1. Use Compression Shirts
Compression shirts, such as the Thundershirt and Suitical’s Recovery Suit, provide gentle, constant pressure that can significantly reduce anxiety in dogs during storms. These shirts act much like swaddling a baby, helping pets feel secure. GoldPaw makes a Sun Shield Tee that is light, and UV blocking for dogs that tend to overheat easily while Canada Pooch has a weighted design.
Shop around and try a few during the next storm. It’s kind of amazing how quickly the right compression tool will help if properly introduced and fitted.
2. Try Calming Ingredients Like L-theanine and CBD
Supplements containing natural calming ingredients, including L-theanine and full spectrum hemp extract (aka CBD,) can lessen anxiety and stress when given before a storm. Speak with your veterinarian or local pet supply shop about which product and dosage may be best for your pet.
Many pet parents report success with calming aids, but it’s best to seek professional guidance and use the best product you can afford.
3. Ask Your Vet About Pharmaceuticals for Severe Cases
If your pet experiences extreme anxiety during storms, including destructive behavior, escape attempts, or incessant trembling, prescription medications may be necessary to soothe them during weather events. Veterinarians can recommend safe anti-anxiety medications tailored to your animal’s needs.
Trazadone is a popular option, which is safe for both cats and dogs, but dosed precisely for their species, weight, and medical history.
4. Stay Home When Possible
Whenever severe thunderstorms are forecasted, stay home with your pet if possible. Your presence is one of the most reassuring factors for your cat or dog. Provide a safe, quiet interior room where your pet can retreat, away from windows and loud noises. Play some music, snack on something delicious that your pet might share, and try to make it as positive an experience as possible. The goal is for your pet to think that, even though they can be noisy and scary, storms aren’t all bad.
If you can’t stay home, count on us to help. We can stop by to check on your pet, interact with them, give them some love, and ensure that they aren’t getting themselves into fear-induced trouble.
5. Remain Calm and Comfort Your Pet
Animals look to their humans for cues during stressful moments. Stay calm, use reassuring voices, and pet or cuddle your animal gently. Avoid punishing or scolding them for anxious behaviors; instead, reinforce calm behavior with affection and treats.
If your dog’s fear of storms is so extreme that a trainer is in order, find one that will use positive reinforcement to recondition their response. Never use fear or aggression to address unwanted behaviors as punitive approaches can, unfortunately, make matters worse.
