From Animal Lover to Pet Care Leader
As a Certified Professional Animal Care Operator (CPACO) and the Founder and President of 4-Legged Kids, Inc., I have dedicated my career to elevating the standards and professionalism in the pet sitting industry. My journey began with a passion for animals and a job at a veterinary clinic. From there, I had a vision to create the premier pet care service in St. Louis that goes beyond the basics. Today, I’m sharing about myself and my journey to transform the pet sitting industry. It’s been an amazing ride and there’s plenty more to come!
How It Started & How It’s Going
4-Legged Kids, Inc.
On April Fool’s Day 1997, I was let go from my office manager/technician job at a local veterinary clinic. I was profoundly disappointed. I had put my heart into that position and, when all was said and done, I was still replaceable. Fortunately, I had a side gig taking care of pets that I had met through my work at the clinic. One client mentioned starting a business but I thought she was crazy. I remember thinking, “Ewwww!” I was a hard science person and business was boring.
Fast forward to 2024, and 4-Legged Kids, Inc., is the premier pet sitting and dog walking company in St. Louis. We strive for excellence by emphasizing ongoing education, professional certifications, and a commitment to providing the best care for pets. Our Team Values tree, pictured left, embodies my philosophy. Pet care is about more than just playing with animals; it’s about doing work that truly matters and being a trusted extension of the pet owner’s family. The work has been anything but boring and I count myself fortunate to have had the gumption to take a bad day and turn it into a journey that would not only improve my life but also the lives of many others.
PetBiz University
Recognizing the need for education and professional development in our field, I founded PetBiz University. PetBiz University™ provides resources and community so pet business owners can run their pet business without it running their lives. PetBiz University’s online platform offers comprehensive courses and resources for pet care professionals, covering essential topics from business management to animal behavior. Through PetBiz University, I aim to share my extensive knowledge and experience, helping others build successful and sustainable pet care businesses in a self-propelled, self-paced format.
PetBizMBA Accelerator
For those looking to take their pet care businesses to the next level, I created the PetBizMBA Accelerator program. This intensive coaching and mentorship initiative helps pet care professionals develop the skills and strategies needed to grow their teams, improve operations, and increase profitability. By sharing my expertise and guiding others through the challenges of business ownership, I strive to raise the bar for our entire industry starting with dedicated business owners like these pictured left.
PetBizMBA is a 12-month business accelerator curriculum. It’s designed to help pet business owners with teams build a solid foundation and achieve sustainable growth. This intensive program features weekly lessons and actionable homework, ensuring you make real progress every step of the way.
PetBiz Podcast
My commitment to education also extends beyond management and coaching and into my role as the host of the PetBiz Podcast. This valuable resource provides insights, interviews, and practical advice for pet care professionals on a wide range of topics relevant to our industry. The podcast serves as a platform for sharing best practices, discussing industry trends, and inspiring fellow pet care entrepreneurs to strive for excellence. In over 100 episodes, I have shared everything from personal musings and serious business education to fantastic interviews from other leaders in the pet industry.
PetBizCRM Solutions
Understanding the importance of efficient business management in pet care, I most recently developed PetBizCRM Solutions. This customer relationship management system is specifically designed for pet care businesses. It helps owners streamline their operations, manage client relationships, and improve overall efficiency. By providing this tailored solution, I empower fellow pet care professionals to focus more on what they do best – caring for animals.
Technology has become an integral part of the pet care industry but our industry is complex. Designing software that solves the problems I encountered early on and addresses limitations to existing software is a contribution few of us can make in this industry. I’m proud to be heading this important initiative.
Leading the Industry In More Ways Than One
Industry Memberships & Recognition
My contributions extend beyond my own ventures. In addition, I serve on the international board of the Professional Animal Care Certification Council (PACCC). In this role, I contribute my time and expertise to standardizing care for pets across our industry. My efforts help ensure that pet care professionals worldwide have access to recognized certifications and standards of excellence.
Further, I am a Certified Professional Pet Sitter through Pet Sitters International (PSI) and was honored to be named a top five finalist in their 2021 International Pet Sitter of the Year award. This recognition acknowledges my commitment to quality care, professionalism, and ongoing education in the pet care industry. I am also an active member of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) and a Fear Free Certified Professional.
Speaking Engagements
Over the years, I have been invited to speak at several pet industry conferences. These industry events include the Texas Pet Sitters Conference in Dallas in 2023, the 2023 PSI Annual Conference, and the 2023 Florida Services Association Conference. This year, I spoke at the NAPPS Annual Conference and will be presenting at the Pet Boarding and Daycare Expo in Hershey, Pennsylvania next month. I have also been a guest on a number of podcasts including the Pet Sitter Confessional podcast.
Looking into 2025, not only will I be attending various conferences, I will also be speaking, leading workshops, and more. My goal with each event being to reach business owners that need solutions. I know I can provide tools and knowledge to bring their businesses to the next level.
Supporting Rescue in St. Louis
As mentioned in last week’s blog, I designed my company around a One-for One business model. We provide a meal to a local homeless pet for every service provided. Our current sponsored rescues are Second Chance Ranch and Tenth Life Cat Rescue. Working in this industry has opened my eyes to the difficulties of pet rescue. Shelters and rescues are overwhelmed; they need resources. I wanted to help. My business model is now inspiring business owners from around the US to consider doing the same for their communities.
